National Institute for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE) was
established in 1994 under the auspices of Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission
with the mandate to undertake research and to train manpower in the field of
Biotechnology. Because of its contributions in scientific research, NIBGE
has been recognized both nationally and internationally. The institute has
been awarded the status of a Centre of Excellence in Biotechnology by the
Ministry of Science and Technology and has also been affiliate with
Centre of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), Trieste, Italy.

The National Commission on Biotechnology (NCB) has been set up for the
promotion of biotechnology in the country and is headed by Dr
Anwar Nasim, Advisor on Science to COMSTECH. NCB has the mandate to
formulate a national policy and action plan to promote the uses and
applications of biotechnology for socio-economic development
particularly in agriculture, health and industrial sectors. Further details
