Background

Environmental stresses are the most important limiting factors for agricultural productivity. The agriculture sector thus faces a big challenge to meet the requirements of food and raw materials for ever increasing population of the world. Abiotic stresses such as drought, salinity, extremes in temperatures, heavy metals and radiation, etc. have detrimental effects on plant growth and yield. To overcome these limitations and improve agricultural production, stress tolerant crops have to be developed. Plant improvement using biotechnology and conventional breeding and proper management will lead to alleviation of the adverse impact of environmental stresses on plant productivity.
